Flowers: FAQ’s Answered |

FAQ’s Answered by a Wedding Planner

As a wedding planner I am often asked by my clients about many different aspects of their big day. From budgeting to wedding flowers, I handle all the details. A common question I get is, “How much should I spend on my flowers?” Weddings in Louisiana, on average, cost anywhere from $28,000 to $38,000, depending upon wedding location, guest count, and a number of other factors. When I create budgets for wedding planning clients, I normally allocate 8-10% of their budget for flowers. Depending upon how important flowers are to the couple, they may spend less or more.

There are a number of factors that affect a florist’s pricing. One of the most important pricing factors is the season. Different flowers have different growing seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall). Therefore, if you try to order a winter flower for a summer wedding, it will cost more (if it is available) than a flower that is in season. Ask your florist to keep the out-of-season flowers to a minimum if you are concerned about your budget.

Another question I get is in regards to preserving the bridal bouquet. Some couples may opt for silk flowers. However, I would suggest getting your florist to dry and preserve your bouquet after your wedding. Another option I have seen is to get a painting or professional photos done of your bridal bouquet. This is a way to remember your bouquet, while also creating art for your home.

The third most common question I receive is about the bouquet toss. “Do I toss my actual bouquet?” You can, but if you desire to preserve your bouquet or keep it for any other photographs, I would suggest an alternative. You can either toss a bridesmaid’s bouquet or you can have a florist make a smaller or less complex bouquet, specifically for you to toss.

The following suggestions were provided by Michelle Pierce, with the Sentimental Petal (www.thesentimentalpetal.com).

“Please make sure you ask your florist the following questions:

1. Which side is the back/front of the bouquet? They should designate front from back with some pins.

2. Show me how to properly hold my bouquet. Many nervous brides tend to hold the bouquet too high, hiding the details of their dress.

3. Where do I pin the boutonniere? These should never be pinned on a shirt, but on suspenders or a jacket. If you have a wedding planner, they should be able to assist with this as well.”

When you hire your florist, they should be able to answer any other questions you may have that are specific to your wedding.
